This, the oldest genealogical society in Connecticut, was founded in 1954 by a small group of genealogists in southwestern Connecticut. Then known as the Stamford Genealogical Society, the title of its bulletin was changed in 1971 to Connecticut Ancestry. Finally, in 1989, the organization's name was officially changed to Connecticut Ancestry Society, Inc.
In 1999 a new Society seal and journal cover design were introduced. The plow and the spinning wheel represent the industry of the men and women who founded our nation. The tree, extending beyond the circle of the seal, represents vigorous branching from its deep roots. The sunburst on the map of the state emphasizes the Society's focus on southwestern Connecticut, though the extent both of our roots and of our branches defies any geographical limitation.
The Society's growing membership now extends across the continent with only about half living in Connecticut. The Board of Governors includes an elected president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer together with officers appointed by the board, including the editor, genealogist, and committee chairmen. The work of the Society is all done by volunteers, and both professional and amateur genealogists are active participants.
Membership Details:
Annual dues of just $25 entitle members to four issues of Connecticut Ancestry, free publication of queries, and notification of Society meetings and other genealogical events. The Society's membership year begins June 1. Dues for new and renewed memberships received by February 28 will receive a full volume year of journals, beginning with the past August issue. Subscriptions made in March or April must indicate whether they are for the current or following membership year.
